On deciding finiteness of matrix groups
We provide a new, practical algorithm for deciding finiteness of matrix groups over function fields of zero characteristic. The algorithm has been implemented inGAP. Experimental results and extensions of the algorithm to any field of zero characteristic are discussed. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
متن کاملConnected Abelian Groups in Compact Loops
We shall prove the following theorem concerning compact connected abelian groups: For any element x in a compact connected abelian group there is an element y such that the closure of the cyclic group generated by y is connected and contains x. This is a generalisation of the well known fact that any compact connected group whose topology admits a basis of at most continuum cardinality is monot...
متن کاملFinitely generated connected locally compact groups
Hofmann and Morris [6] proved that a locally compact connected group G has a finite subset generating a dense subgroup if and only if the weight w(G) of G does not exceed c , the cardinality of the continuum. The minimum cardinality of such a topological generating set is an invariant of the group, is denoted by σ(G), and is called the topological rank of G . For compact abelian groups of weigh...
متن کاملAnalysis on compact Lie groups of large dimension and on connected compact groups
The study of Gaussian convolution semigroups is a subject at the crossroad between abstract and concrete problems in harmonic analysis. This article suggests selected open problems that are in large part motivated by joint work with Alexander Bendikov. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Andrzej Hulanicki. My first scientific encounter with Andrzej was through his students, which is fittin...
